The Phenomenon. The primary data of physical adsortpion, expressed as the adsorption isotherm, is the measure of the equilibrium quantity of an adsorptive present at a gas/solid interface at a fixed temperature as a function of pressure. In addition to providing a measure of the extent of a surface, the adsorption isotherm conveys an abundance of information about the energetic heterogeneity and geometric topology or porosity of a solid substrate.
