Globally, the need for surveying and spatial professionals continues to increase. Australia is no exception, the industry faces a critical shortage. The issue was highlighted at the recent FIG2010 conference in Sydney by Chris Rizos, the head of the School of Surveying and Spatial Information Systems at UNSW. "Despite technology revolutionising the world of surveying and spatial information, we can no longer meet the needs of industry and government," he said. "Australia's pool of surveyors and spatial information technology professionals is also ageing, with only 20 per cent of the profession being in their twenties, the lowest proportion ever."
