Comment on 'Confined placental mosaicism at chorionic villous sampling: Risk factors and pregnancy outcome'

We read with considerable interest the article published by Baffero et al. entitled 'Confined placental mosaicism at chorionic villous sampling: risk factors and pregnancy outcome'} This article deals with risk factors and outcomes of pregnancies complicated by confined placental mosaicism (CPM). From a series of 6835 chorionic villus sampling (CVS), 115 CPM of which the pregnancy characteristics and outcomes were known, were compared with 230 control pregnancies. It is therefore an important monocentric study on CPM and its obstetrical complications, and we congratulate the authors on their work. The main results did surprise us, however, and we would like to take this opportunity to respond. From the results of this study the authors conclude that there is no increased risk of an unfavorable pregnancy outcome in cases of CPM. They therefore recommend that patients should be reassured in such cases, which surprised us. Although in the majority of cases of CPM pregnancy outcomes are favorable, in cases of type 3 CPM (CPM of meiotic origin) pregnancy outcomes are associated, in our experience, with intrauterine growth restriction and intrauterine fetal death.
