AWEED that once limited itself to pastures and roadsides has found its way into corn and soybean fields, especially in reduced tillage. Glen Nice and Bill Johnson, Purdue University weed control specialists, received numerous calls this spring about poison hemlock and how to deal with it. The first step is to recognize it, Nice says. It's a biennial, meaning it has a two-year life cycle. The first year it grows relatively close to the ground as a rosette. That's when it's more susceptible to herbicides. The second year it bolts, growing 3 to 8 feet tall and flowering. It can still be suppressed, but it's tougher at that stage.
