摘要

THE equipment you use to produce hay is just a cattle producer's cost of doing business, right? That's not necessarily the case, says Gordon Groover, Virginia Tech Extension economist. If you are growing hay to feed your cattle, you need to look closely at the cost of your machinery to see if owning it is really a profitable scenario. The price of machinery makes business sense "if our cost per ton of making hay is a reasonable price," he says. However, in many cases, especially on smaller operations, that cost is not so reasonable.
