TWO things make grass finishing more trying than feedlot finishing, even for highly skilled graziers: Grass lacks the nutritional energy of corn. Good forage can be very high in protein, but never carries the intrinsic energy of a high-corn ration. Forage quality varies widely with growing conditions, even under the best management. It is subject to varying quantities of rain, sun, temperature and fertility, not to mention the nutritional differences in forage content and age. That contrasts with the way corn is harvested at a consistent stage, analyzed and measured, and fed twice daily in a relatively stable environment with highly predictable results.
