ALL signs point toward the possibility that white mold could become an issue in soybeans in 2011. There are no guarantees, especially with soybean diseases, but Kiersten Wise, a Purdue University disease specialist, says this disease bears watching. Much of her concern relates to the fact that most farmers still rotate. The 2009 season was a particularly rough one for white mold, especially in the northern half of Illinois and Indiana. Many of those fields will go back to soybeans this year. Since the fungus that causes the disease stays in the field for a long time, plenty of inoculum will likely be present in many fields.
