Imagine a 21st-century solution that takes visibility and control deep into the distribution grid's middle and last miles, offering support for distribution automation (DA), substation automation (SA) and advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) at any point along the network without being limited by the availability of necessary bandwidth on existing wired and fiber technologies. Wireless Field Area Networks (FANs) address this promise now, supporting today's low-latency, high-availability smart grid applications to provide maximum control and response farther into the network with minimum extra cost. FANs enable new levels of real-time performance data and outage information and offer the control, flexibility and expandability required for future smart grid applications while leveraging advanced communications topologies and standards such as Long Term Evolution (LTE) and WiMAX.
