The quest for higher generating efficiency continues to raise unit operating pressures and temperatures worldwide. For more than a decade, supercritical and ultra-supercritical plants in Japan and Europe have proven that T/P92 can handle the very high stresses these steam conditions produce. In the U.S., ASME has approved the use of T/P92 in utility boilers, pressure vessels, and plant piping. This article compares the mechanical, chemical, and metallurgical properties of T/P92 to those of T/P91 - the current material of choice for high-energy piping in U.S. plants - and explains the design, fabrication, and installation issues that prospective T/P92 users should take into account.
