Portable designs are the center of the target for a lot of vendors who are lucky to place an arrow in the outer ring. The programmable logic camp touts the flexibility, low NRE and fast time-to-market of their products -if only they were smaller and cheap enough to make sense in volume production. ASICs set the benchmark for speed and low unit cost at high volume, at the same time setting new standards for long development timelines and high development costs.
