I first met Jean Golding when she was in Oxford and I was starting my perinatal and paediatric epidemiology career back in Perth in 1970s. I had been privileged to train in epidemiology in England when it led the perinatal world with several large cohort studies, registers of birth defects, confidential enquiries into perinatal deaths, and large total population data sets of births and their outcomes. Jean Golding was at the centre of this great intellectual set of activities, which made considerable impact on both care of pregnant women and children and in the prevention of major problems. Coming from a strong statistical background and teaming up with the UK's best medically qualified perinatal researchers, Jean was able to make a huge contribution.
