摘要

There are no absolutes in the practice of medicine. Everything we do is based on a calculated risk/benefit ratio. In making the calculation, we bring to bear knowledge, available evidence, experience (our own and that of others), the individual requirements of the individual patient, the constraints of the service, and a rather nebulous but important entity known as clinical judgment, which is an amalgam of the above.Nobody would query the requirement for intravenous (i.v.) access in any child having intermediate or major surgery. The debate is purely about children having minor, short, usually superficial procedures under general anesthesia.
