Dust abatement from hot gases is frequently performed using rigid filters of appropriate construction materials. These filter elements are periodically cleaned by applying a reverse pulse of compressed air. The pulse generating system should yield a maximum jet momentum, while operating at the lowest possible pressure to reduce the consumption of pulse air. Extensive literature data and theories are reviewed in the paper. The cleaning intensity is commonly related to the differential pressure generated during pulsejet cleaning. This △P is measured by fast pressure transducers. Several types of pressure signals are monitored and compared with own measurements. The underlying parameters for an efficient cleaning are thereafter reviewed and commented upon. The available literature also presents several complex models to predict the internal pressure and axial velocity profiles during the pulse cleaning of the filter. These models are assessed and judged difficult to apply. A future follow-up paper will detail own experimental findings and develop a more appropriate 1-dimensional model.
