The modem fertility transition may well end before demographers are satisfied that they possess an adequate theory to explain it, Models drawn from economics and studies of diffusion processes have been very productive, but since the 1970s there havebeen few attempts at synthesis, a big theory linking multiple levels of analysis and fertility trends in diverse settings over long periods. Offspring: Human Fertility Behavior in Biodemographic Perspective broadens the field. This volume, based on two workshops held under the auspices of the National Research Council's Committee on Population, inspires hope that the biology of behavior will provide the study of human fertility with a productive set of research programs, and perhaps the next big theory.
