POPULAR PLASTICS & PACKAGING: Can you enlighten us as to the beginning of your career with Union Carbide India Ltd., where eventually, with the late Mr. V. Dorairaj you played a pivotal role in the development and application of LDPE. P. P. Kharas: I joined Union Carbide India Ltd (UCIL) in 1960 as a Development Engineer. UCIL had in 1960 set up a Polyethylene and Chemical Plant with Ethyl Alcohol as raw material. The Polyethylene capacity was 3000 MT per annum. This level of annual consumption is common today for several small scale units. UCIL had also planned, at that time, a Polyethylene manufacturing unit of 20,000 MT per annum based on Naphtha, for completion by 1966. It was a huge task to develop a market three times the volume produced in 1960.
