Plastic which biodegrades within 12 weeks

US researchers at the Missouri University of Science and Technology (S&T) are developing environmentally friendly plastics,which can degrade totally within 12 weeks.The team led by Dr K B Lee,professor of Chemical Engineering at Missouri University is trying to improve the properties of the biodegradable plastics for day to day applications.The research team is engaged in constructing a new breed of biodegradable and bioavailable plastic to reduce the tonnes of plastic waste in landfills each year.They are trying it by combining and modifying a variety of bio-based,oil based and natural polymer to create optimal blends that can be used to make agricultural films bottles,biomedical and drug delivery devices etc.
