The French city of Strasbourg hosted the 16th European Symposium on Poultry Nutrition, organised by the local branch of the Worlds Poultry Science Association in August this year. It attracted attendance from 450 delegates from 53 countries throughoutEurope and further afield. This report offers a flavour of the wide range of topics discussed at the meeting. Control of bacteriological contamination in animal feed was the topic addressed by F. Putier (Tecaliman, France). He covered the physical and chemical treatment of feed - primarily heat/steam and organic acids - commenting that a combination of these maybe synergistic: heat and short-chain fatty acids can effectively kill salmonella in feed. Re-contamination of feed after processing is a majorconcern, and its prevention requires a rigorous control plan. He commented that using more heat increases energy consumption - a greater concern to feed manufacturers in these energy-conscious times.
