Research at a Gold Kist plant demonstrates that an on-line vision system can be used to improve product quality and yield on a 180 bird-per-minute kill line. What gets measured, gets fixed is an old axiom of production management that is still true today. Conversely, without feedback, just about any production process will provide optimum results only by accident. In many instances, the challenge is how to gather data on a process effectively and efficiently while it is ongoing. It is particularly hard to gather this data on a poultry processing line that runs at 180 birds per minute. Researchers from Georgia Tech, working in collaboration with Gainco, Inc., BOC Thinkage and Gold Kist, Inc., tested whether a vision system could be used to improve production control in the kill room at the broiler processing plant in Carrolltort, Georgia, U.S.A.
