Evaporative cooling systems are standard equipment for almost all modem poultry houses these days. In spite of the wide use and acceptance of these systems, there are still many myths and misconceptions regarding cooling through evaporation. Let's review some of the basic principles behind evaporative cooling. First of all, the process of water changing from a liquid to a gas (evaporation) is what cools the air. The evaporation process requires energy in the form of heat. Every gallon of water thatis evaporated requires and thus removes 8,700 BTU's of heat from the air.
