Higher demand boosts EU trade. In the first seven months of last year, European Union imports of poultrymeat expanded by some 160,000 tonnes (or 64 percent), while exports outside the Community declined by 7 percent. This points to a higher demand for poultrymeat from within the Community as consumers reacted to the BSE crisis in continental Europe and to a lesser extent, the Foot and Mouth disease outbreak which impacted on demand in the UK, the Netherlands and France. The accompanying table abstracted from Poultry Round-up, shows that imports from outside the Community exceeded 408,000t during the seven months compared with less than 249,000t in the same period in the previous year. The largest increase both in terms of tonnage and percentage occurred in Germany as purchases from non-EU countries jumped from 104,000t to 187,000t or 79 percent. However, clearly both the Netherlands and the UK were also much more active buyers. Spain also recorded a significant rise in non-EU imports.
