Recent moves by the Ethiopian government to boost its tea output will undoubtedly challenge the Kenyan tea industry's world-wide market position. Although its current production capacity is smaller than that of Kenya, growing conditions and leaf quality are similar and could match them in the market. Ethiopia currently only produces 7,000 tonnes of tea from three privately run estates. However, the Ethiopian government has identified some 50,000 hectares of land suitable for production of the beverage and with the help of private investment, it is hoped that one day the tea industry will complement their highly successful coffee growing and processing industry.
