On a recent opinion of the French national bioethics committee considered in a French-German perspective

Cross-border cooperation in evaluating new technologies with respect to their impact on society can be based on common values in spite of differences in judgments and evaluations.Indeed,the Kantian heritage is still one of the philosophical pillars of the French educational system,which was set up by the Third Republic after the Franco-Prussian war of 1870,and is especially one of the pillars of the teaching of philosophy at universities in France.How to make use of this philosophical heritage and how to interpret it remain however open questions.Much of the philosophical debate on bioethics does not derive from this background.The bioethical exercise which is performed mainly by our National Ethics Committees is more and more a compromise (a perfectly democratic one) between the various ideological and philosophical tendencies which are represented in these committees.
