London's mayor unveils new waste management strategy / Columbia introduces 5 cent fee on bags

"I want London to become the best big city on earth." Those words end the introduction of "The Mayor's Draft Municipal Waste Management Strategy: London's Wasted Resource", issued in January 2010 by the office of mayor Boris Johnson. With a watchful eye on 2012, the year the Olympics come to London, Johnson's new strategy includes devising a road map towards a plastic-bag-free London and achieving zero municipal waste directly to landfill by 2025. The 174-page document promotes a "paradigm shift away from a throwa-way culture", outlining several measures to reduce the roughly 4m t of municipal waste produced in the city annually.
