Brassicaceae are represented in Sicily by numerous crops, each with different local cultivars, and by various wild species gathered and utilized as vegetables. This wide genetic variability encouraged us to start a programme to collect and study germplasm widespread in two areas of the island; the final aim is to obtain more uniform cultivars and to set up new crops from wild species. The activities are in progress; at present we provide preliminary data concerning the main groups and cultons belonging to better-known crops and some wild Brassicaceae whose produce is utilized and sometimes commercialized in local markets.
