The Senate Oct. 4 passed by unanimous consent a bill that would ban products containing asbestos. The Ban Asbestos in America Act of 2007, introduced by Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), would amend the Toxic Substances Control Act and require the Environmental Protection Agency to issue regulations prohibiting the importation, manufacturing, processing, or distribution of asbestos-containing materials. The bill also would allow limited exemptions, including government uses and "diaphragms for existing electrolysis installations."
