Synthesis, Crystal Structure and DNA Binding Studies of Bis(piperidinium)bis-(N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediammonium) Decavanadate(V) Tetrahydrate

A new decavanadate compound consisting of one decavanadate polyanion [V_(10)O_(28)]~(6-) , two protonated piperidinium cations [C5H_(12)N]~+ , two doubly protonated N,N,N',N'-tetramethylethylenediammonium cations [C6N2H_(18)]~(2+) and four lattice water molecules, namely, [(C5H_(12)N)_2][(C6N2H_(18))2][V_(10)O_(28)]·4H2O, has been synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic (IR, UV-vis and ESR) studies and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. It crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P2_1 and Z=2, with a = 11.1267(18) A,b = 16.854(3) A,c= 12.973(2) A, and β=95.426(2)°.The cations, anions and lattice water molecules are assembled by hydrogen bonds, forming a three-dimensional supramolecular architecture. The DNA-binding property of the compound was preliminarily investigated by using fluorescence spectrum, and the results indicating that the interaction mode between the compound and herring sperm DNA (HS-DNA) might be groove binding with the quenching constant of 1.20X10~4.To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report about the DNA-binding study of decavanadate compounds.
