Acobalt(III) 8-hydroxyquinoline complex [Co(8-Q)_3]centre dot 0.5CH3OH 1, (8-HQ = 8-hydroxy-quinoline) has been synthesized by low-temperature solid-state reaction. Single crystal X-ray analyses revealed that compound 1 possesses a three-dimensional (3-D) supramolecular structure. Each Co ion is bridged by three 8-hydroxyquinoline ligands. The compound 1 was characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectra and UV-visible spectra. The third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties were also investigated and they exhibit good nonlinear absorption and self-defocusing performance with modulus of the hyper-polarizability (gamma) 5.23x10~(-30) esu for 1 in a 1.06x10~(-4) mol centre dot dm~(-3) DMF solution.
