PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a novel low-cost nonlinear optical material stably producing a high nonlinear optical effect and excellent also in safety. ;SOLUTION: Soln. of alkoxide, nitrate or org. acid salt of at least one kind of metal selected from among V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Cu is impregnated into a porous transparent material, dried and thermally decomposed to produce the objective tertiary nonlinear optical material. In other way, a composite layer contg. fine metal oxide particles of ≤500nm particle diameter dispersed in a transparent substance is formed on a subsrate by a simultaneous sputtering method or an alternate sputtering method using a transparent substance target and a target of oxide of at least one kind of metal selected from among V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Cu to produce the objective tertiary nonlinear optical material.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
