Long-life automotive coolants are prompting a switch to PPS pump impellers

Airtex Products of Fairfield, IL, USA, is developing injection-molded polyphenylene sulfide impellers for the water pumps to go on six new U.S. cars. The firm's director of engineering Curt Ulm explains, "Today's glycol 'long-life coolants' contain organo acid inhibitors that prevent particulate formation and so extend coolant life to 160,000 km (100,000 miles). Unfortunately, these inhibitors can attack aluminum and many plastics."
