China consumed some 864 million mt of coal in the first quarter of 2010, up 17.4% year-on-year, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said May 6. Of the total consumed, the power industry accounted for about 444 million mt, up 22% on-year; the steel industry accounted for 136 million mt, up 20.3% on-year; and the building materials industry accounted for about 890,000 mt, up 15.3% on-year. The chemicals industry accounted for 360,000 mt, up 6.1% on-year; and other industries accounted for 159 million mt, up 7.8% on-year, the report said.
