Dow Q1 net income leaps to $551 million from $24 million year ago

Madrid — Dow Chemical Company, the world's largest chemicals producer, increased net profit in the first quarter of 2010 to $551 million from $24 million a year ago as it made more sales in nearly all segments, it said Wednesday. Sales at the Midland, Michigan-headquartered company were $13.4 billion, up 33% from Q1 2009 on a pro forma basis, which discounts asset sales, including a 27% increase in US sales and a 35% increase in EMEA region sales. Dow has looked to sell or shut a number of production units as a way of cutting costs and reducing debt.
