The Northwest European styrene monomer FOB ARA benchmark achieved a modest rebound of $10.50/mt to close the week up $54.50/mt at $1,735/mt. Spot prices rode on a spectacular rally September 11 to trade and be assessed at the second highest level of all time — $1,800/mt FOB ARA, with gains rooted in tight supply, buoyant demand and short-covering. While the market cooled later into the week, overriding sentiment remained bullish as scarcity and strong demand was perceived to remain through October despite imports, given the impending closure of Ineos Styrenics' Marl facilities.
