Polypropylene prices in South America were trending down in some regions and up in others this week, as uncertainty in the financial and energy markets weighted heavily in participants’ minds. Just last week, market sources said higher offers from Asia were allowing producers in Colombia and Brazil to raise theirs by as much as $100/mt over July. This week, however, the tendency in the Brazilian market was for prices to fall for both polypropylene and polyethylene, according to at least two sources. A trader there said PP offers to Brazil from Asia and the Middle East were down $40-$50/mt and another such drop was being anticipated next week. That, in turn, was forcing local producer Braskem to match the decreases by lowering PE offers by as much as $70/mt and PP offers by as much as $100/mt, the trader said.
