Sources reported this week that the length in the European propylene market had marginally improved on the back of maintenances and exports. Shipping reports showed a 9kt cargo fixed from Tarragona to Central America loading on August 20-23. “Excess volume has been exported,” a producer said. “Asian prices are now increasing rapidly, as they are looking for material after the Formosa fire. This has made available some opportunities out of Europe,” he added. Despite the fall in the energy complex through the week, propylene values in Asia spiked on the back of another fire at Formosa Petrochemical’s refinery in Mailiao, Taiwan. FOB Korea propylene prices were up $85/mt on the week, assessed at $1,591/mt Friday, on supply concerns. In Europe, sources said that FOB prices had crossed the Eur900/mt mark.
