US exports to Mexico to reach 5 Bcf/d by 2020; pipeline buildout leads way

US gas exports to Mexico will reach 5 Bcf/d by 2020, according to a report by Platts unit Bentek Energy. According to an analytic feature in the newly released Platts Analytics Mexico Energy Monthly, a massive buildout in pipeline capacity is expected to lead the next wave of export growth. The forecast takes into account all major gas fundamentals and balances them against the larger North American CellModel and global gas models. Pipeline capacity between the US and Mexico is set to expand to around 14.7 Bcf/d by 2019, more than twice the current level and nearly four times as much capacity compared with 2010. These new border crossings will be crucial in supporting economic growth during a period of falling domestic production and rising power and industrial demand in Mexico.
