SHARINQ OF SOCIAL COST WITH PLANTATION COS ON CARDS

In order to minimize the social cost currently being incurred by the plantation industry for social welfare schemes, the Department of Commerce has come out with a Central scheme of Rs.1,414 crore in the next five years for the construction of houses,maintenance, drinking water facility, sanitation and medical facility for workers in the plantation sectors. Official sources said the social costs incurred by plantation owners in the case of tea, for instance, are anywhere between Rs. 8 and 14 a kg our of a total production cost of tea of Rs.65 a kg. But these social costs being indispensable, they also impose an additional burden on growers which add to production costs.
