This trial was conducted on a Bojac fine sandy loam soil (organic matter <1%) at Virginia Tech’s Eastern Shore Agricultural Research and Extension Center, Painter, VA. Fertilizer was applied at the rate of 50 lb/A N, (30% UAN), broadcast incorporatedbefore planting on 16 Aug. Rows were side dressed with 50 lb/A N, (33% Ammonium nitate) on 7 Sep. Cucumbers were seeded on 16 Aug. During the growing season standard recommended practices for weed and insect control were followed. Plots consisted of single, 30-ft rows spaced 6-ft apart. Treatments were replicated four times and were arranged in a randomized complete block design. The spray boom for the first treatment application was a boom with two adjacent nozzles fitted with twinjet 8006 tips. The spray boom for the remaining applications consisted of three nozzles spaced 20 inches apart fitted with twinjet 11004 tips. The two outer nozzles were mounted on 15 inch drop tubes. Sprays were first applied on 5 Sep and reapplied on 13, 19, 25 Sep and 3Oct. For powdery mildew control all treatments including the nontreated control were sprayed with Quintec 2SC at 4 fl oz/A alternated with Nova 40W at 5 oz/A. Downy mildew incidence (percentage of leaves infected) and severity (percentage of leaf surface infected) ratings were taken on 14, 26 Sep and 9 Oct. Cucumbers were hand-harvested, sized, and weighed on 12 Oct. Oversize pickles weighing greater than 0.5 lb were removed and assigned a 0.2 lb weight.
