The protective coatings are generally recognized like the most advisable method from the technical-economic point of view for the protection of iron and steel structures exposed in aggressive environments (for example, saline atmospheres, sea-water, etc.). Many products of high technological development have been used to obtain this objective; nevertheless, some show behaviors less satisfactory than expected. The zinc-rich coatings as well as those modified have performed like the most effective in relation to other coatings; their success is based on the particular capacity to generate cathodic protection (zinc acts like sacrifice anode) and also to act like a resistant barrier. The anodic reaction corresponds to the zinc particle dissolution whereas the cathodic process implies the oxygen reduction on the surface of the metallic substrate.
