摘要

Who could guess that Leonardo da Vinci and his Mona Lisa would have stimulated thoughts about loss control in metal and non-metal mines? The Christian Science Monitor reported on some research in Paris on the famous painting. Her smile is still a mystery. The scientists, without damaging the painting, discovered that da Vinci painted up to 30 layers of paint and glazes to give his paintings a hazy quality and to create the illusion of depth. All of the layers are less than 40 micrometers deep, or half the thickness of a human hair. The last thing we want in loss control in the mines is a hazy quality. It is not likely that 30 layers of anything would prove particularly useful. However, the keys to success in loss control are multiple program elements directed at reducing injuries, property damage and the interruption of process. Program elements in a loss-control program are like the multiple layers of paint.
