As reported previously in this column, complaints about highway noise has the concrete and asphalt industries locked in battle over which paving materials provides the best overall value in terms of performance, cost and acceptable noise levels. Some researchers, however, are taking a different tact: analyzing tire vibration fingerprints to develop quieter tread designs.
