Asingle barge loaded with 1,500 tons of aggregate carries the equivalent of 15 jumbo rail cars or 58 large trucks. As a result, producers near inland or coastal waterways are tapping into barge transport as the most logical and cost-efficient way to move material. Consider that one gallon of fuel can move one ton of freight 59 miles by truck. But by barge, the figure jumps to 514 miles. Do the math. You'll find that barge transportation is nearly 10 times more fuel-efficient than truck transport. So it's not surprising that more and more material is flowing from conveyor to barge. Barge loading is one of today's major trends in conveying applications. A variety of innovative conveyor systems, some which include telescoping radial stacking conveyors, are utilized for the task. As the height of the discharge pulley and the radial position is variable, a telescoping conveyor is ideal when centering loads in a desired configuration on the barge.
