Marker-assisted selection as a component of conventional plant breeding.

This chapter reviews the use of marker-assisted selection (MAS) as an integral component of conventional plant breeding. It discusses which traits (such as yield) should be targeted, which marker systems should be used, marker-trait association studies, and the different breeding methods where MAS can be or has been deployed. It also discusses the economics of MAS and presents a list of cultivars and improved lines developed through successful deployment of MAS. The limitations and future possibilities of using MAS as an integral component of conventional plant breeding are briefly described.
