Land use patterns and school planning decisions influence transportation options for students. Because cycling continues to be a transportation option for many students, assessing existing bikeway networks can be an important first step towards making schools more accessible. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applications are used in this study to evaluate factors relating to bikeway infrastructure around schools for a case study of three middle schools in Washoe County, Nevada. In addition to the absolute length of bikeways, important determinants of bicycle use were connections of bikeways to the schools (connectivity) and ratios between roadways, bikeways, and student capacity of a school.
