Shapiro’s article [1] reviews and documents the huge literature on the mechanisms of genome change. He rightly regards this as a central issue in biology. Is the genome simply a static database of inherited information unchanged by the organism itself, or is it a dynamic “organ of the cell”, to quote the Nobel laureate Barbara McClintock [2].
