The complexity of modern health care demands that patients be active participants in all facets of their care to make optimal choices and maximize their health and well-being. As part of this involvement, they must be well informed about the options available to them and the care they receive, including the medications they take. Toward that end, it is important that patient-directed prescription drug information be both useful and available. Patient-directed prescription drug information is not intended to take the place of discussions with healthcare professionals; rather, it is intended to supplement such discussions.
