Nut oil and crude protein contents were analysed in the walnut population in the Timocka Krajina region. Nuts were collected from the same walnut trees in 1989-91 at five localities. Oil content was determined by the NMR method and crude proteins by using the micro Kjeldahl method. The following categories were established on the basis of oil content: kernels with low (up to 50%), medium (50.1-60.0%), high (60.1-70.0%) and very high (over 70.1%) oil content. According to crude proteins content, the fruits were grouped as follows: kernels with low (up to 15%), medium (15.1-20.0%) and high (over 20.1%) contents. The trees with fruits having medium (50.2%) and high (43.6%) kernel oil contents predominate in the population studied. Considerably fewer trees had low or vey high kernel oil contents (5.0% and 1.2% of trees, respectively). Average kernel oil content in the fruit of the walnut population was 59%. The lowest and the highest kernel oil content found in individual trees were 44.0% and 77.5%, respectively. Kernel crude protein content varied from 10.7% to 23.4%. Walnut fruits are characterised by having mean kernel crude protein content in 71.1% trees. Low crude protein content was found in kernels of 24.0% and high in 4.9% of the trees in the population. Average crude protein content in the walnut population was 16.6%. The lowest and the highest crude protein contents found in individual trees were 10.7% and 23.4%, respectively.%Analiziran je sadržaj ulja i sirovih proteina u plodovima populacije oraha Timočke krajine.
