Restored to Earth: Christianity, Environmental Ethics, and Ecological Restoration

"We care for the land because it is good for the land. We care for the land because It is good for the Lake Mendota watershed. We care for the land because it is good for the souls of all God's people." Thus do the Benedictine sisters of Holy Wisdom Monastery of Wisconsin articulate their decision to transform 130 acres of degraded farmland to native prairie. Each year the sisters invite local volunteers to join them in the ongoing work of prairie restoration: rebuilding the soil, removing invasive weeds, and collecting and planting thousands of native seeds. When the work is done, the community gathers for a "Prairie Rhapsody," celebrating with music and food the work of restoring the land.
