The June 2002 U.S. Customs article discussed the Farm Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002 (the "Act"), an agriculture law that mandates country of origin labeling for certain imported agricultural products. The Act requires that, as of September 30, 2004, retailers of imported beef, veal, lamb, pork, farm-raised and wild fish including shellfish, perishable agricultural commodities such as fruits and vegetables, and peanuts must inform consumers at the point of retail sale of the country of origin of the particular products at issue. In the interim, the Act calls for a two-year voluntary country of origin marking program.
