Singapore's strategy to achieve water independence has succeeded in expanding domestic water supply in addition to stimulating business for local companies such as Hyflux Ltd., United Envirotech, Memstar, and SembCorp. - could this strategy work for energy independence?rnThe Republic of Singapore's plans for self-sufficiency in water supply by 2061 are progressing so well that the government opted not to renew a 50-year water supply agreement with Malaysia that was signed in 1961. According to Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Dr. Yaacob Ibrahim, Singapore has significantly increased and diversified its water supply through new reservoirs, desalination plants, and NEWater plants. On the demand side, aggressive conservation campaigns, tariffs, and fees have reduced domestic water use since 2003 by 10 liters/ day per person. Clearly, Singapore's integrated water management strategy is working.
