How can manufacturers generate a buzz for new brands or line extensions in the post-Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) era? Well, it seems that they are going to need bold new initiatives to thrust their products into the public eye. And new brands or line extensions are going to have to earn marketing support by bringing something new to the market. Advance from Brown & Williamson and Quest (and Omni before it) from Vector are cases in point. All three are manufactured in ways that might result in claims of reduced risk to the smoker, if such claims were allowed. Advance, developed originally by Star Scientific, is made using Star's low-nitrosamine flue-cured tobacco. It is probably the first of many brands, line extensions or reformulations that will try to capitalise on the availability of reduced-nitrosamine flue-cured in the US.
